Everything in the made world was designed: the city or town where you live, the street where you live, and the bus or bicycle you ride to school. The shape and layout of the rooms in your home were designed, as was all the furniture, all the kitchen appliances, and all of your sports equipment and computer games. Your clothes, your toothbrush, the cooking utensils in the kitchen, and the packaged food you eat were designed. The display of clothes in your favorite store, the counter and cash register where you pay, the packaging used to carry your purchases home: all were designed. Look carefully at the photographs in Figure 3-1. At fi rst glance, the products seem to be very different. Some are small, others are large. Some products are found indoors and some are found outdoors. What other differences can you see? While the differences between these products may be obvious, they also share many common characteristics. They all serve a purpose, including providing comfort, shelter, and transportation. They all use materials in their manufacture, including stone, cardboard, steel, and plastic. What other characteristics do the products share? In what ways are all these products the same?
