Chapter 1 Sending and Receiving Messages

Addressing and Formatting Messages
Google provides tools to give users additional options in addressing and
formatting e-mail. When users write a new e-mail, they can include recipients
who are not the user’s primary audience. These recipients can be carbon copied
on an e-mail to keep them informed about the topic. Cc stands for carbon copy.
The names and address of those that have been carbon copied are visible to all
other recipients. Bcc stands for blind carbon copy. Names and addresses entered
in the
Bcc
text box are not visible to other recipients. Including recipients as a
bcc rather than a cc is typically done to protect the identity of the recipients.
Below the message text box users can access formatting options, as seen
in Figure 1-2. These buttons are similar to those found on the formatting
toolbar of a word processor. The Gmail tools include those that change the
look of the text such as bold, italic, underline, font type, font size, and text
color. Other tools allow users to format entire lines or paragraphs of text,
such as the tools for creating automatically numbered or bulleted lists. When
using these tools, however, keep in mind that Gmail formatting may not be
supported by the recipient’s e-mail software. In those cases, the formatting
added to an e-mail in Gmail could be stripped out of the message.
