Unit 1 Google Mail
This number refers to the number of messages in a conversation. The names
in bold indicate the senders of unread messages. The user can respond to any
e-mail in the conversation, although often the most recent e-mail is the one to
which a response is sent.
Personalizing Gmail
Users can customize the Gmail window in the
Settings
menu. This can
include choosing a profi le photo, setting up a signature, and selecting a
theme. Customizing Gmail in these ways allows users to have it refl ect their
personality.
Users can select a photo that will represent them for other Gmail users.
Some people choose to use a photo of themselves. Others choose to use a
photo of an object of something that represents them. Once chosen, the user
can decide if the photo will be seen by everyone or just people with whom
the user has agreed to chat. Chatting is discussed in Chapter 5. If the user
chooses to have the photo visible by everyone, the photo will appear when
other users place their cursor over the user’s name in their inboxes, contacts,
chat lists, or when someone looks at the user’s public Google profi le.
The sender of an e-mail message usually enters his or her name as
part of the closing of the message. With some messages, information in
addition to a name is appropriate. In these cases, it can be helpful to create
a signature. A signature is text that is automatically included in all outgoing
messages. A signature usually includes your name and contact information.
If the user is sending e-mail for work, the signature often includes his or
her work title, business contact information, and business website address.
Rather than entering this information every time, a signature allows the user
to set it up once and have it included in every message.
Another way to personalize Gmail is to select a theme. Themes allow
you to customize the appearance of your Gmail window. Some themes
change the background of the Gmail page to an image or to a solid color.
Some themes even change based on the weather at the zip code you enter.
