Weld the root pass(es). Be sure to obtain penetration into both pieces of base metal and into the backing plate. This is key to producing a quality weld. Remove all weld slag. Use a power grinder as needed. Always wear chipping goggles when chipping or wire brushing. CAUTION 8. Weld intermediate weld passes and a cover pass, if required, to fill the weld joint. The final weld passes or cover pass must completely fill the weld joint and have a face reinforcement not to exceed 1/8″ (3 mm). Inspection Your instructor should inspect your pieces after they are tack welded. This is to ensure you have the proper root opening and groove angle. Your instructor will inspect again after the root pass(es) is welded, cleaned, and ground if necessary. The finished weldment will be visually inspected by your instructor or by a test supervisor. A face-bend and a root-bend specimen will be cut out, prepared, tested, and evaluated. The inspection and acceptance criteria are specified in AWS D1.1.
