Lapped Zippers In a lapped zipper application, one side of the zipper opening forms a lap over the zipper. The zipper coil is less visible in lapped zippers than in centered zippers. Most openings in side seams are closed with lapped zippers because the lap hides the zipper from view. You can also use lapped zippers for other garment openings, such as the center back. Follow these steps for a lapped zipper application: 1. Sew, baste, and press the zipper seam as for a centered zipper. 2. Attach the zipper foot so it is to the right of the needle. Open the zipper. Place the bottom stop of the zipper on top of the fi rst basting stitch. The coil should lie exactly on the seam line, 26-25. 3. Machine baste through the zipper tape and the right seam allowance, sewing from bottom to top. Stitch very close to the zipper coil. As you sew next to the pull tab, tilt it so you can keep your stitches straight. 4. Close the zipper. Turn it right side up. This creates a fold along the stitches just sewn. 5. Move the zipper foot to the left of the needle. Readjust stitch to regular length. Stitch very close to the edge of the fold, 26-26. Sew from bottom to top.
