340 Auto Brakes
Figure 19-16. A—Removing the parking brake cable retainer
(finger or prong type) with a screw-type hose clamp. The
clamp is placed around the retainer fingers, and tightened
just enough to allow the cable and retainer to be removed
from the backing (support) plate. Some may also be removed
by placing a box-end wrench of the correct size over the fin-
gers. B—Removing the parking brake cable sheath from the
backing plate. Brake cable being held with a clip. C—Cable
being retained by a snap ring. Clamps and other methods are
also used. (Chrysler, Hyundai)

Intermediate Cable Replacement
If the vehicle has an intermediate cable, removal
procedures are similar to those for the front brake cable.
However, the intermediate cable can be removed from
under the vehicle. Start by raising and supporting the vehi-
cle. After removing cable tension, remove the cable ends
at the multiplier and equalizer. Check that the new cable is
correct, then install it and readjust the parking brake.
Rear Cable Replacement
To remove a rear cable, raise and support the vehicle.
Remove the tire and wheel. Loosen the equalizer adjuster
enough to provide some cable slack. Remove the cable at
the equalizer and remove any guides between the equal-
izer and wheel. Then follow the procedures necessary for
a drum or disc brake.
Drum Brake
Remove the brake drum and remove any brake dust
with an approved vacuum or washer. Remove the primary
shoes and the brake strut. Remove the cable lever from
the secondary shoe. If a finger type retainer is used to hold
the cable sheath to the backing plate, compress the fingers
with a hose screw clamp, Figure 19-16.
If a clip holds the sheath, remove the clip, Figure 19-16.
Remove the sheath from the backing plate and pull out or
unbolt the cable retainer. Then disconnect the end of the
cable from the parking brake lever. See Figure 19-17.
Install the cable assembly into the backing plate and
reinstall the fastener. Be sure a clip retainer is fully installed,
and that a finger type is fully inserted until the fingers expand
outward and grip the backing plate. Install the parking brake
lever on the end of the cable. Then reassemble the brake
shoe assembly and strut. Reinstall the drum, and adjust the
brakes as necessary. Reinstall the wheel and tire.
