Chapter 2 Drawings and Templates

The automatic save timer starts as soon as you make a change to the file and fi
resets when you save the file. The file fi saves automatically when you start the first fi fi
command after reaching the automatic save time. Keep this in mind if you let the
computer remain idle; an automatic save does not execute until you return and issue
a command. Be sure to save your fi le manually if you plan to be away from your fi
computer for an extended period.
Drawing Recovery Manager
The automatic save fi le is available for use if AutoCAD shuts down unexpectedly. fi
Therefore, when you close a file normally, AutoCAD deletes the automatic save file. fi fi
However, after a system failure, the
Drawing Recovery Manager
displays the next time
you open AutoCAD. The
Drawing Recovery Manager
contains a node for every file that fi
was open at the time of the system failure. It displays all of the available versions of
each fi le: the original file, fi the recovered file fi saved at the time of the system failure, the fi
automatic save file, and the BAK file. fi Pick a version in the fi
Drawing Recovery Manager
to view, determine which version you want to save, and then save that file. You can fi
save the recovered file over the original file fi name. fi
Backup Files
By default, AutoCAD saves a backup fi le in the same folder as the drawing or fi
template fi le. Backup files fi have a fi
.bak
extension. When you save a drawing or template,
k
the fi le updates, and the old file fi overwrites the backup file. fi Therefore, the backup file fi fi
is always one save behind the drawing or template file. fi
