Copyright Goodheart-Willcox Co., Inc. Chapter 15 Point Clouds 403 setting, which allows you to adjust the resolution, or density, of the point cloud. The value defi nes the minimum cubic volume of a single point. Drag the slider or enter a value in the text box to adjust the setting. A smaller value produces more points and a higher resolution, resulting in a larger fi le size. A higher value produces fewer points and a lower resolution, resulting in a smaller fi le size. To align the point cloud with a coordinate system, use the Coordinate system text boxes. If a coordinate system has been assigned, it is listed in the Current text box. Use the Target text box to convert to a different coordinate system, if needed. The Up axis buttons are used to specify the axis orientation of the model. Pick the X, Y, or Z button to specify which axis is used to set the “up” direction of the model. The Z axis is the default “up” axis. Picking the Flip axis button fl ips the “up” axis orientation. Once you are done adjusting settings, pick Import files. Importing begins and an icon representing each fi le appears near the top of the Import files screen. See Figure 15-3. Each icon has a circular progress bar indicating the import status. You can continue working while the fi les are importing. If you have selected multiple fi les, you can choose to register the scan fi les or proceed to indexing the scan fi les, as discussed next. Registering Scans As discussed earlier, registration is the process of aligning scan fi les so that different fi les in the project use the same coordinate system. This provides a way to accurately link together scans that are generated from different scanner positions. When scan fi les are importing, you can choose to skip registration, register the scan fi les manually, or have the program register the scan fi les automatically. To access these options, hover the cursor over the Auto register scans button on the Import files screen. If you choose to register the scan fi les manually, registration mode is activated and you are prompted to select a scan fi le to serve as the base fi le. Then, you select three matching pairs of points between the base fi le and another scan fi le. Figure 15-3. The Import files screen.
