It is good to know what you are trying to impart before you add graphics. Figure 4-18 explains when to use the different categories of graphics. The user can experiment with different types of layouts and then different representations among the types. For example, there are 40 different List options. To add a SmartArt graphic to your document or presentation, click Insert Illustrations SmartArt. This launches the Choose a SmartArt Graphic dialog box. Select a type of graphic from the middle pane. The left-hand pane lists the categories that were described in Figure 4-18. Choose a category from this list to narrow down the options. Then, click OK. Enter text in the appropriate places, or click on the arrow that appears on the left-hand edge of the selection box to expand the Type your text here dialog box. Press Enter if your list is longer than the allotted space. Use the Tab key to indent to a lower level. In Microsoft PowerPoint, existing lists can be converted directly to SmartArt by selecting the list, right-clicking on the selection, and choosing Convert to SmartArt from the shortcut menu. SmartArt graphics can be modifi ed once they are inserted into a fi le. To modify SmartArt, click SmartArt Tools Design. This ribbon menu contains buttons to change the text and organization of the graphic, choose another type of SmartArt layout, and change colors or styles. There is also a Reset Graphic button.
