Organization
The text is divided into five units and 14 chapters to accommodate classes that are
presented online or face-to-face. The units may be covered in any order that meets
the requirements of the class. However, it is suggested that Unit 1 be the first unit
introduced.
There are five specific units that follow a sequential progression of preparing for
a career. Topics covered in these units include Career Planning, Online Presence,
Job-Application Process, Landing a Job, and Your Career.
Unit 1 focuses on career planning and the starting line in a person’s job search.
The content aligns with the real-world experience of conducting a self-assessment,
writing a career plan, and creating a personal brand.
Unit 2 explains the integration of the Internet and social media as tools for the job
search. The creation of a positive online presence in the networking process, while
learning to protect personal identity, is covered in detail.
Unit 3 provides coverage of some of the most important aspects of a job search—
résumés, cover letters, and job applications. The chapters also reflect approaches
and methods for creating and tracking employment documents.
Unit 4 prepares job seekers for interview preparation, execution, and reflection.
This allows students to experience every aspect of a job interview, from scheduling
and participating in an interview to assessing what was learned.
Unit 5 emphasizes what to expect when a job is offered. Additionally, information is
provided about how to make the most of the first job in a new career.
New to This Edition
The second edition of Connect to Your Career has been revised to reflect a more sequen- r
tial presentation of the career-search process than in the previous edition. Additionally,
the content in each chapter has been updated to reflect the ever-changing technologi-
cal tools used in a job search.
The most noticeable change to this edition is the reorganization of the chapters. The
workplace success chapters have been moved and appear in Unit 1 before the online
presence and networking unit. These changes allow for a more logical order of creating
a career plan that can be incorporated earlier in the job-search process.
In addition, two new chapters have been added which increases the length of the text
to 14 chapters instead of 12. The additional coverage of branding and career success
presents additional material that students need to understand before entering the
workplace.

Chapter 1 Preparing for Your Career
provides students with insight regarding
r
steps to begin planning for their future careers. Originally placed in Chapter 5 of the
previous edition, this information was moved to the beginning of the text to better
reflect self-assessment and the creation of a career plan as tools for success. Creating a
career plan establishes the foundation for other skills as they are presented in the text.
Career pathing is also included as a component of a career plan.

Chapter 2 Workplace Success,
formerly Chapter 4, now includes digital
citizenship, which is explained in detail to prepare students for professional
responsibilities surrounding Internet and computer usage in the workplace. This
material serves as a refresher of the importance of respecting the Internet as a
professional and the consequences that could be experienced if respect is not honored.
