This collection resides in computer memory or in a storage location. Software programs may create temporary fi les that are deleted when the software program no longer needs them. Other fi les contain information created by a user, and the software allows the user to save and open the fi le for further use. When a fi le is saved, it is given a fi le name so that the fi le can be located and used again. It is a good practice to assign meaningful and memorable fi le names so you or another person can recognize the fi les. Windows uses a system of named folders to catalog and contain fi les. Notice that the names in Windows echo activities in an offi ce or school setting. When students save paper fi les that belong together, they often use a manila folder.
