certifi ed check. A personal check for which a
fi nancial institution guarantees payment. (17-1)
certifi ed used cars. Cars that have been inspected
and repaired. (24-2)
character. Inner traits, such as conscience, moral
strength, and social attitudes, that guide a
person’s conduct and behavior into acceptable
standards of right and wrong. (10-1)
child care cooperative. A child care program
formed by groups of parents who share in the
care of their children, allowing parents more
control over the program. (9-2)
childless family. A couple without children. (6-2)
children with special needs. Children with
disabilities, and gifted and talented children.

cholesterol. A fatty substance found in every body
cell. (13-1)
chronological growth. Increase in age, which takes
place at the same rate for all people. (10-1)
classic. A fashion that never changes drastically
and is therefore worn year after year. (19-3)
classical conditioning. Theory that behaviors can
be associated with responses. (10-1)
cleaning agents. Materials used to remove soil;
often added to water. (23-3)
cleaning schedule. A written plan identifying
what household cleaning tasks need to be
done, who is responsible for which tasks, and
how often the tasks are to be completed. (23-3)
climacteric. Reduced hormone production in
middle-aged men, possibly resulting in changes
in moods and emotions. (10-5)
clipping. Making straight cuts in a seam
allowance toward the stitching line, usually at
½
-inch intervals, to prevent puckering. (21-3)
codependency. A pattern of unhealthy behaviors
that is used by family members to cover up a
problem. (7-1)
cognition. The processes involving thought and
knowledge. (10-1)
cognitive disability. A disability that limits the
way a person’s brain functions, causing a
limited learning capacity. (10-2)
coinsurance. An insurance policy provision that
requires the policyholder to pay a certain
percentage of medical costs. (17-4)
collateral. Something of value a person owns that
he or she pledges to a creditor as security for
a loan. (17-3)
color wheel. A tool that shows how colors relate
to one another. (19-2)
communicable diseases. Illnesses that can be
passed on to other people. (11-1)
communication. The process of conveying
information so messages are received and
understood. (2-2)
community resources. Facilities that are shared
by many people, such as parks, schools, and
libraries. (4-1)
comparison shopping. Comparing products
and prices in different stores before making a
purchase. (18-1)
complementary color scheme. A color scheme
using colors opposite each other on the color
wheel for a strong contrast. (19-2)
compromise. A technique used in negotiating
confl icts in which all parties agree to give up
something of importance to reach a mutual
agreement. (2-4)
computer-aided design (CAD). Graphics
software that assists in creating a design. (18-2)
condominium. An individually owned housing
unit in a multiunit structure. (22-1)
confl ict. A struggle between two people or groups
who have opposing views. (2-4)
confl ict resolution process. A step-by-step form
of communication that allows confl icts to be
resolved in a positive manner. (2-4)
consequences. Results that follow an action or
behavior. (11-2)
consistency. Enforcing rules the same way each
time. (11-2)
constitution. A set of major laws used to govern
an organization. (3-2)
Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
A government agency that sets and enforces
safety standards for consumer products and
handles consumer complaints. (18-4)
